Our Story
From a pioneering South African mushroom farm to a three-farm group supplying customers nationally.

“A South African growing story shaped by practical innovation and consistent care.”
The Highveld Mushrooms Story
Highveld Mushrooms was founded by Chris Richardson and Colin Jacobson with the original intention of supplying the mushroom-processing industry. The farm began by producing approximately four tons per week and pioneered the use of chicken manure and other agricultural inputs in its compost rather than relying exclusively on horse manure.
As demand changed, the company moved increasingly toward fresh mushrooms. Over the following decades, it expanded its farming footprint, strengthened its retail relationships and invested in increasingly advanced composting and growing technology.
Chris Richardson and Colin Jacobson begin producing around four tons per week.
With demand for processed mushrooms declining, the farm begins focusing predominantly on fresh mushrooms.
Chris Richardson purchases Colin Jacobson’s shares and becomes the sole owner.
Chris Richardson’s eldest son Ross joins the business and later becomes Managing Director.
The Vaal district farm expands production and retailer supply capability.
Investment begins in an advanced compost yard and modern growing tunnels.
Chris Richardson’s youngest son, Baring, becomes Production Director for Meadow Farm.
The group purchases a majority stake in Medallion Mushrooms.
Medallion moves into a new Joostenbergvlakte facility.
The group continues to improve production through technology, food-safety programmes and responsible farming.
