The Bradford market
A district of small businesses, where almost nobody is competing online.
Bradford's economy is unusually small-business shaped. The textile mills went, and what stands in their place is a dense base of micro and small firms: manufacturers and wholesalers working out of converted mills, food businesses and one of the busiest restaurant and takeaway trades in the country, builders and trades, retailers in the city centre and across Shipley, Bingley, Keighley and Ilkley, and the visitor trade that comes with Saltaire, Haworth and Ilkley Moor. Most of those businesses have never invested in search, which is why the local competition is thin: in plenty of categories the businesses ranking first are there by default rather than by design.
That is the opening, and it is also the risk. A market where nobody competes is a market where the first business to take it seriously keeps it. A Keighley manufacturer and a Manningham takeaway share a district and nothing else — not the buyer, not the search, not the sales cycle — but both are losing enquiries for the same reason.
